Position Description
(Assistant Professor):
The
Department of Geoscience, Aarhus University, Denmark invites applications for a
Tenure Track Assistant Professorship or Associate Professorship in Quaternary
Geology. We are searching for a highly qualified and motivated scientist in the
field of Quaternary cryosphere systems with focus on the glacial geological
record.
Department
of Geoscience
The
Department of Geoscience currently employs around 110 staff and
has a strong research profile spanning a broad range of geological and
geophysical disciplines including the basic and applied aspects of the
Quaternary system (palaeoceanography, landscape evolution, glacial geology,
sedimentary record, stratigraphy, geochronology, hydrogeology,
hydrogeophysics). These fields are represented by several professors, associate
professors, assistant professors, post-doctoral fellows and Ph.D. students. The
Department is well equipped for glacial geological research and teaching with
infrastructure including sedimentological, geochemical and
micropalaeontological laboratories, as well as a full-range of shallow
geophysical infrastructure. We also have strong links to other departments at
Aarhus University, including Physics and Astronomy, Engineering, Biology, and
Archaeology.
Qualifications
The
ideal candidate must demonstrate interdisciplinary research in Quaternary
Geology with special knowledge of quantitative methodologies to study the
record of continental glaciations. We seek expertise in any of these fields:
(i) numerical modelling of ice sheet dynamics, (ii) glacial processes, and
(iii) origin and properties of glacial deposits. Experience with other aspects
of the Quaternary cryosphere as well as an interest in combining fieldwork,
analogue experiments and numerical simulations of glacial processes will be
advantageous. Knowledge of GIS applications in teaching and research is
welcome.
The
successful candidate will have a strong international research standing and a
broad multidisciplinary research network. Their scientific profile will be
reflected in relevant publications in international peer-reviewed journals.
Proven ability to attract external research funding and documented teaching
skills are required.
The candidate will expand research
collaborations at the highest international level following their scientific
interests and priorities, and establish a vibrant research group utilizing
external funding from national and international sources. The appointee will
develop and teach in-doors and field courses, and supervise students at all
academic levels. The appointee will have interest in glacial geology of
Denmark, collaboration with industrial partners engaged in hydrogeology and
engineering geology of soft sediments, and cooperation with other research
units at Aarhus University such as the Department of Engineering. Within the
Department of Geoscience, the appointee will develop collaborations with other
research groups in climate, hydrogeology, and modelling.
Application procedure
The
Department encourages all genders to apply and to make a specific note in the
CV about previous parental leaves of absence. Shortlisting and external
evaluation are used. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the
potential to be a strong role model for the values of equality, diversity and
inclusion. It is expected that the appointee will acquire, within three years,
proficiency in Danish sufficient for teaching in bachelor programs and for
participation in departmental and university administration.
The
place of work is the Department of Geoscience, Aarhus University,
Høegh-Guldbergs Gade 2, DK-8000 Aarhus C . The beautiful Aarhus University
